Streusel Topping

(Makes about 2-1/2 cups)

Streusel toppings are a delicious gift from the Germanic people. They are sweet, buttery, and add texture to many baked desserts. This recipe can be used as a topping for muffins, nut breads, and coffee cakes. It can also be used to make fruit crisps.

1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2  teaspoon ground cinnamon
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold, chopped into 1/2-inch cubes
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, more if you prefer

Place the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon in the work bowl of a food processor and pulse a few times to evenly blend the ingredients. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Empty the mixture from the work bowl into a mixing bowl and add the chopped nuts, stirring to combine. You can store the mixture in a zip top plastic bag in the frig for up to a month.
