American Butter Frosting Basic American Butter Frosting can be flavored easily by changing the vanilla to almond extract, or reducing the amount of vanilla and adding some orange zest. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the flavors. 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature Place the butter, sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl and beat on medium high speed until the mixture is evenly blended and smooth, about 3 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of milk or light cream and beat on medium high speed for another minute, until the frosting is light and fluffy. If the frosting is too stiff, add a little more milk or light cream.
